Understanding the generation who is rising up to take over future operations is a key management competency. Each age group has been tough differently, and each group works differently, as well. Knowing how to bridge the gap between these different groups and knowing how to make adaptations is extremely important. While the older individuals may be more apt to see long term pay off, being a reliable force within your business, a younger individual may be more interested in gaining job skills as a stepping stone to move on to a new future challenge. One very important management competency skill is the ability to give your employees space and time to develop their skills and grow. It can be helpful to meet with your employees from time to time to discuss their desired work path for the future, and give them advice on how to continue to move forward on their career map.

It is important to lead with your best foot forward. Maximize your strengths, and also be humble enough to realize your deficiencies. Work on those and surround yourself with individuals who can provide strength in those areas. Also be aware of the strength of your employees and help them not only maximize those strengths but also allow for training in weaker areas.
6. Adapt to changes.
If you are in a management position and see opportunities for changing direction and also making conditions and the culture of your job acceptable to retain your leading employees, it is important to step up and vocalize these issues. You are the voice who will help others higher up in the organization understand the changing need in the company. You also do not want a work environment that has become outdated, making your employees more prone to jump ship when the opportunity presents itself.
